Why I Choose Strength Training - and Why It Matters for All of Us

By Natsumi Swain on January 26, 2026

One of my clients recently lent me the book ‘Unbreakable’ by Dr Vonda Wright. While reading it, I listened to her podcast on The Diary of a CEO, and it really resonated with me.

Dr Vonda Wright is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in healthy ageing, and her message is clear and science-backed: Muscle is essential for longevity.

Strength training isn’t just about strength or looking fit. When we’re younger, muscle often supports appearance and performance. After our 40s, the purpose shifts, it becomes about protecting mobility, independence, brain health, and long-term quality of life.

Looking back on 2025, it was a year of big change for me. I moved my gym into a larger space and grew my business, but the most life-changing moment was losing my dad suddenly at 69. That loss made me reflect deeply on how daily habits — how we eat, move, and recover — affect our long-term health. This isn’t about blame, but awareness. Our everyday choices compound over time.

It made me ask myself:

  • How do I want to age?
  • How can I stay independent and strong?
  • How can I protect my brain and my body?

Prevention is more powerful than treatment.

In this podcast, Dr Wright explains how even short bouts of focused, high-effort strength training send powerful signals to the body to preserve muscle, improve metabolic health, and build long-term resilience. Strength training isn’t optional if we want to age well — it’s an investment in our future.

💪 Strength training matters for all of us, at every stage of life.
