What is Strength Training - More Than Just Lifting Heavy

By Natsumi Swain on February 19, 2025

When people hear "strength training," they often picture powerlifters hoisting massive weights. While lifting heavy is part of it, strength training is much more than that—and it’s essential for everyone, not just athletes.

Strength training is about building muscle, resilience, and long-term health. It’s not just about how much weight you can lift but how strong, mobile, and capable your body becomes. Whether you're 25 or 65+, adding strength training to your routine can transform your life.

What Strength Training Really Means

At its core, strength training is any exercise that challenges your muscles to work against resistance. This can include:

✔ Free weights (dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells)
✔ Resistance bands
✔ Bodyweight exercises (push-ups, squats, lunges, etc.)
✔ Machines or cable systems

It’s not all about lifting the heaviest weight possible. It’s about progressively challenging your muscles so they grow stronger, more durable, and more functional. We say challenging weight instead of heavy weight.
